White Spotted Hoverfly Brightly coloured winged insect, Hoverflies usually have spots, stripes, or bands of yellow or brown against a dark-coloured background, sometimes with dense hair covering the body surface. Many resemble bees, bumble bees, and wasps and most adults feed on nectar and pollen. One of the most characteristic features of hoverflies is the presence of a longitudinal false vein in the wing. The image was captured using only natural light but there was enough light being reflected by the white flowers to allow sufficient depth of field. I chose not to over enlarge the fly as I wished to include enough of the habitat background to allow the viewer to see the habitat of the insect. Pentax Mx3n SLR 135mm lens and close up filter. |
