Making a Jigsaw! This simple tutorial is hardly original but is still enjoyable and can produce a pleasing image. 1. First open the image and make sure you have manipulated the image's levels etc. to get the best out of the photograph.
2 You can now apply the effects that will turn this image into a familiar jigsaw. Apply the filter>texture>texturizer and then load texture from the drop down menu as shown below.
The texture filters are found within your Photoshop files so follow this path to see what others you have. C:\program files\adobe\photoshop\presets/textures, and load the puzzle texture.
3 Choose the settings according to your personal taste (and image size - the ones shown above work well on this small test image), the texture will be applied to your image as shown below.
4 You could leave the image at this stage, but lets go a little further to add some reality to it. Open the layers palette and double click the Background thumbnail and rename it, the name isn't important but this changes the background into a layer already for the next stage. Next zoom into the image and using the freehand selection tool carefully select one or two pieces of the jigsaw, feather the edge by 1 pixel and then hit Ctrl+X to cut out the pieces and Ctrl+V to copy them to a new layer. It is best to do them separately so that each jigsaw piece is on it's own layer as we show below.
5 Next select edit>transform>rotate tool turn your pieces to give them a more random appearance. Then select add layer style (at the base of the layers pallette) and select drop shadow. Set the distance, spread and size to very low figures to suit your taste.
6 Now select the main image and add the same drop shadow options. This will give the spaces some depth and finish your image. You can now flatten the layers when you are certain you are happy with your work, but it is a good idea to save it as a layers PSD file too. If you don't flatten the image add a new layer beneath the main image and convert this to a background layer as this will give a white base to the missing pieces.
