Air Brushed Portrait:

This tutorial will show you how to remove minor imperfections and reflections from an other wise good portrait:

1    Open the image you wish to manipulate. This is a portrait of my daughter, taken with direct on camera flash, unfortunately this has created some unflattering reflections on her cheek and nose.

2     Now copy the image onto a new layer by dragging the background down to the envelope icon at bottom of the layers palette.

3     Apply some blurring to the new copy layer by clicking on 'filter'>'blur'>'Gaussian blur'. The effect should look slightly more blurred than you would have thought and will depend on the image size and resolution, in this example I have chosen to set the radius to 7.5 but the image I am using is very low resolution, normally I would set the radius to about 20.

4     Next add a layer mask-hide all to this blurred copy layer by holding alt on the keyboard and left click on layer mask icon at bottom of layers palette (square with little circle inside). This produces a filled mask which has the affect of hiding all effects.

5     Next make sure the background colour in the tools palette is white and select a soft edged brush. Change the foreground colour to white and choose a soft edged brush and reduce the opacity on top task bar to about 25.Next click on the layer mask in the layers palette and start painting on the image with the brush, because the opacity is set to a low level the effect will be mild and controllable. If you overdo the effect simply change the background colour in the Tools palette to black and paint over the mistake to rectify your mistakes.

6     Finally to add a little more sparkle to the image, select the background layer and using the Lasso tool draw a selection around the eyes, when you have selected both eyes, click on 'Layer' > 'New' > 'Layer by copy'. This creates a new layer containing only a copy of the eyes.

7     Change the blending mode for the new layer to screen and reduce the opacity to achieve the effect you want.

8     Repeat the above to select and adjust the teeth, before flattening the image and saving the results.

Here is my final image.
