St. Gothard Pass, Switzerland.

The pass, 6,935 ft (2,114 m) high, was first extensively used in the 11th century, it joins northern Switzerland to Italy and the south. My photograph shows the St. Gothard Road (built 1820-30) taken from the new road tunnel which was opened in 1980; 10.2 mi (16.4 km) long and with a capacity of 1,500 vehicles per hour. It certainly improved road travel between Switzerland and Italy, until a fiery crash in 2001 closed the road tunnel for two months and long delays have occurred ever since.

I took the photograph to show the intense gradient of the old road and the landscape it cuts through. The road is still used by some motorists and the even fewer hardy cyclists, some are visible at the base of the first of the first hairpin.
