Redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum) In its native Sierra Nevada the giant redwood (also known as Wellingtonia) reaches a height of 80 metres and can live for 3000 years. Giant redwoods weighing 2000 tonnes are not unknown. This deep-rooting evergreen with its thick spongy red-brown bark, has been planted in Britain since 1853. This splendid avenue of Redwoods are to be found at Ministeracres, which is a Passionist Monastery and Retreat and Conference Centre set in beautiful County Durham countryside. I chose to accentuate the avenue by taking the photograph standing close to one tree looking straight down the series of other trees and using the textures of the trunks to create interest. I was lucky with as the sun was providing side lighting to increase the prominence of the textures. Pentax *ist D Sigma 28 - 135mm lens. |
