Raby
Castle, Co. Durham. This splendid mediaeval castle, built in the mid 14th century on the site of an earlier fortified manor house by the powerful Nevill family, who owned it until the Rising of the North in 1569, has been the home of Lord Barnard’s family since 1626. The site is traditionally that of King Canute’s mansion. The Neville family, descendants of Canute, lived there until the mid-16th century. I took this photograph from the extensive deer park that surrounds the castle. I used the small stream that drains the lake as a lead, drawing the eye past the tree and grazing herd of deer to the castle in the background. Pentax Mx3n Pentax 28 - 135mm lens. |
