Pont Burn Waterfall

Pont Burn is located within the gently sloped woodlands of Pont Woods, these are generally gentle slopes but steeper slopes do occur on some parts of the site. The woods are approximately 5.5 km northwest of Consett in Co. Durham and cover 89.60 ha (221 acres). The woods consist of a mosaic of broadleaved and conifer high forest stretching southwards from the River Derwent down the west side of Hamsterley Mill and most of the woods are classified as ancient woodland.

I took this photograph of the burn as it winds its way through the woods, I wanted to show movement in the water so I chose a small aperture to slow the shutter speed to 1/4 second, this forced me to use a tripod. A by product of the slow shutter speed apart from blurring the water, was to increase reflections. This is due to the ripples of the water being visually smoothed by the long exposure and although this is not visible to the eye it increases the reflections in the photograph.
