Ice Flowers,

This was a fun project to do on a cold wet day when outdoor photography was not possible. As in the true Blue Peter way, It involved some slight preparation. I used a large baking tray which I partially filled with water and left outside overnight, in the morning when it had frozen over I place some flowers on top of the ice and added more water and returned it outside. However this time as the water began to freeze I carefully lifted the flowers so that they were only partially frozen into the ice. I then lifted the whole ice block from the baking tray , with a little help of some hot water, and took the photograph.

I experimented with the light shining from above and from behind, however I opted for side lighting as the best of both, with enough light coming through the ice to give it depth and some modeling light on the petals to illuminate the fine detail.
