Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix) The hooded crow is closely related to the carrion crow, which until recently was regarded as the same species. In areas where the two species overlap there may be some interbreeding with hybrids showing a mixed grey and black body plumage. Like carrion crows, hoodies also feed on dead animals. I managed to find this one and several others feeding on the seashore in Kerry, Ireland. I watched for some time as the hoodies found the shellfish, flew into the sky and dropped them onto rocks. They then spent minutes finding the shellfish and eating the exposed mollusc’s out of their broken shells.Canon 30D and Canon 10 - 400 IS lens. |
