Grass Hopper (Chorthippus parallelus)

Widespread and common in Great Britain but absent from Ireland. Body length 17-23mm, both sexes recognised by short forewings which do not reach tip of abdomen; proportionately shorter in female. Hindwings absent. Favours meadows.

I took this photograph at noon under bright cloudy conditions which allowed me to use a fairly small aperture using only natural light. Although the subject matter was small I still had to use stealth to get close enough to capture the image and fill the frame.

Pentax Mx3n SLR 135mm lens and close up filter.
