Glacial Lake, Grimsel Pass, Switzerland

The Aarär is the longest river entirely in Switzerland, 183 miles long, rising in the Bernese Alps and fed by several glaciers.  This image shows one of the glacial lakes that feeds into dammed Grimsel Lake. From there it flows generally West through Lake Brienz and Lake Thun before heading North West through Bern before it joins the Rhine River opposite Waldshut, Germany. There are more than 40 hydroelectric power plants on the river.

This image was taken during a wonderful days tour of all the major passes in central Switzerland. My chauffeur for the day was my sister's father in law, a devout Swiss gentleman, who was intent on showing off his country to his English relatives. As we paused by Grimsel lake the clouds parted and the sun shone down on a very proud man and a perfect host.
