Eilean Donan Castle, At the meeting point of three sea lochs on the west coast of Scotland, Eilean Donan is situated by the picturesque village of Dornie on the main tourist route to the Isle of Skye. Is it the most photographed castle in the world? Certainly Eilean Donan is Scotland's most romantic and recognizable, but it is not entirely what it seems. Although the island of Eilean Donan has been a fortified site for at least eight hundred years, the present building dates largely from the early 20th century. Today's castle, which rose from the ruins of it's predecessor, was rebuilt between 1912 and 1932 by Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap. It is hard to believe that the present castle has yet to celebrate its 100 birthday, but easy to be absorbed by the atmosphere of a place which has stood witness to so much history. The top photograph was taken at noon from the the south, I realised that the light was not conducive to taking great photographs but knew that I could return later the same day. I returned later to take the bottom photograph from the north. In between images I had enjoyed a great day on Skye. I knew that the castle would catch the late afternoon sun and I set up early in anticipation of a great sunset opportunity. Unfortunately the sun did set, but it was hidden behind a very large cloud. The envisaged image never materialised and I was glad that I had taken these photograph rather than just waiting. I now have a couple of acceptable images and a great excuse to return on another day!
