Les,

Two studio portraits taken at Consett Photographic Society, of one of my fellow members.

Both images used only one light set to the cameras right hand side. I find this set up is extremely easy to arrange and is very complimentary to the 'older gentleman'. It is very useful for highlighting the character of the face as it brings out all the details and lines.

One of the hardest parts of portrait photography is not the lighting set ups and lens choices, but the interaction with the model. It is the photographer who must put the model at ease to get the best from him / her.

In the top image, which was early in the session Les was still slightly uncomfortable and was guided through a few simple poses to try and relax him. He seemed happier when his hands were occupied.

In the bottom image he was more relaxed and more compliant with my suggestions. I managed to get him to use both hands in the shot in a slightly uncomfortable pose, but one which I find unusual and a far stronger image, showing more of his personality.

Canon 30D camera, 17-85mm lens.
