Ken, A studio portrait taken at Consett Photographic Society, of one of my fellow members. I set up the image to capture all of Ken's obvious character. I set up both studio lights on Ken's right hand side, the first positioned slightly behind him providing side lighting. The second light was slightly in front of him and further away to add some light to the left side of Ken's face. I used a black coloured hand held reflector as a backdrop to give even more attention to his face without any distracting elements in the background. I was quite happy with the digital negative, however I always wanted this to be a monochrome image. I converted the image using two 'hue-saturation' adjustment layers. I then added another adjustment layer and filled in with 50% grey - setting the blend mode to overlay - then painting black in places I wanted to darken, and painting white in places I wanted to lighten. I believe that this is the best way to dodge and burn! Pentax *ist D SLR, Sigma 28 - 105mm lens. |
